Ankle Pain

Structural malalignment
A common source of pain in the ankle and foot is due to structural deficiencies, such as flattened or excessive arches in the midfoot or in the forefoot, and medial deviations (bunions) in the first metatarsophalangeal (big toe) joint. Our therapists will assess for malalignments, and treat any lingering symptoms via manual therapy, taping, exercises, modalities, and acupuncture or recommend use of orthotics.

Sprain/strain of muscles and ligaments
Common injuries to the ligaments and muscles in the ankle occur from a sudden twist (usually ankle inversion or eversion) in the ankle, resulting in pain, decreased movement (range of motion), weight bearing, strength, and balance. Our therapists can reduce pain and swelling via modalities, manual therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and gentle exercise. Once pain and swelling is minimized, appropriate strengthening and balance retraining can be applied to minimize future sprain/strains of the ankle.

Overuse syndromes
Pain in the ankle/foot region can occur as a result of overuse, such as inflamation to the plantar fascia (plantar fasciitis) in the arch of the foot, achilles tendon at the back of the foot (Achilles tendinopathy), and pain along the lateral/outside of the shin (tibialis anterior), commonly referred to as “shin splints”. The goal of our clinic is to relieve pain and swelling in the affected area via manual therapy, acupuncture, modalities, massage therapy, and taping, and to restore balance and function with exercises.

Muscle imbalances
A combination of tight and weak muscles in ankle/calf/foot can create a chronic cycle of pain and discomfort in the ankle and foot. In addition, muscle wasting usually occurs post ankle or bunion surgery. Our therapists perform gait analysis and specific muscle testing to determine the appropriate exercises and stretches to permanently alleviate the problem, and other therapies to eliminate pain and discomfort.
