Rotator cuff tendonitis
The most common term referred to the shoulder pain and /or Range of Motion restriction. This condition may occur as a result either from single accident or repetitive strains. The range of the symptoms may vary from mild discomfort at the front of the shoulder and down the arm to dull ache at night and sharp pain during certain movements. This condition might result in the Impingement Syndrome or Frozen Shoulder Syndrome. The treatment will depend on the stage and the severity of the problem. Manual Therapy, Acupuncture, Exercise Programs and Postural Re-education can be used as treatment of choice. Sometimes calcium might be deposited into the injured tendon ( Calcific Tendonitis), in that case the Ultrasound ( Electrical modalities) can be usefully applied in order to break the Calcium deposit.
Shoulder Bursitis
This is another soft tissue injury of the Shoulder, only caused by inflammation in the one of the Shoulder’s Bursas. Symptoms and treatments will be similar to the Rotator Cuff Tendonitis. This condition may also lead to the Impingement Syndrome or Frozen Shoulder Syndrome.
Impingement Syndrome
This condition occurs when inflamed and swallowed soft tissue will restrict the mobility particularly at the 90 degrees level. The treatment will be based on signs and symptoms, through decreasing inflammation using the Electrical Modalities or Acupuncture, and increasing functional Range of Motion utilizing Passive and Active Exercises Programs as well as Postural Re-education approach.
Frozen Shoulder Syndrome
This is the most advanced soft tissue pathology of the Shoulder Joint. Normally develops over period of time (from several weeks to few months). Primary treatments goals will be: to maintain and increase Range of Motion using combination of passive/active exercise programs along with manual therapy, as well as reduce the pain and inflammation in the soft tissue component using electrotherapy or acupuncture.
AC Joint separation/sprain
This condition relates to ligament injury of the joint between the shoulder blade and collar bone. Different degrees of the ligament damage will be presented with the symptoms ranging from mild discomfort and unusual sounds coming from the shoulder joint during movement, to major “cracking” and clicking” sounds accompanied with sharp pain. The treatment will involve similar modalities along with using Taping techniques in order to immobilize the joint, therefore promote the healing.
Fractures
Bone fractures around the Shoulder joint will not necessarily require full prolonged immobilization, especially in senior patients. Our goal will be to start the early mobilization in order to retain functional Range of Motion. We would normally need to know from the orthopaedic specialist when mobilization can be safely started.
Osteoarthritis
This diagnosis reflects degenerative changes in the Shoulder joint, typically based on combination of clinical finding and x- ray results. Normally develops later in life, or as a result of repetitive soft tissue injuries. Treatment goals will be structured accordingly to the symptoms as well as to the functional needs of the patient. Treatment plan will be based on pain management approach using manual therapy, acupuncture, exercise programs, massage therapy and electrotherapy.
